Zach left small town Edenburg twenty years ago. He got out, went to school in Tidewater, started a business, and never forgot his first love, Mason Gilbert. When he hears Mason's mother has died of a stroke, he drops everything to help his best friend get through it. But Zach left for a reason.

Since Zach abandoned him, Mason has managed to make a small space for himself. He hides his sexuality and, in return, no one brings it up. It's a system that works just fine until his past comes charging back in an off-white Bronco to save the day. Mason doesn't need saving and Zach's unwanted protection is unraveling the life he made.

Tidewater sent Zach back to Mason when Mason needed him most, but Mason is losing clients and credibility. People are choosing sides. Zach thought he was coming back for happily ever after, but he's starting to feel like the big bad wolf.

Not a bad read. But there were a few bugs left in. For instance, the Amazon description says that Mason told him he refused to come out (of the closet) but none of that was there. It might have helped if there was a prologue or something with some back story BEFORE Mason and Zach argued over why Zack left. Secondly, everyone in town kept treating Zach like trash, talking about the trouble he would drag the other boys into, but no ever said what on Earth he did that was bad enough for everyone to hold a 20 yr grudge. Was it just because he was gay? And seriously, 20 yrs of not so much as an email and Mason takes him back in a few days? Lastly, Mason's life practically fell apart when Zach showed up, with half the town now hating him as well as his business going down. He's in a town of less than 800 people. He says he can't leave because his birds wouldn't have a place in the city. So why not move back near Philly with Zach but to a more rural area? I think Mason just didn't want to leave his comfort zone - though it's now a DIScomfort zone - and wanted to prove how much Zach really loved him by staying. The writing was fairly good, but lost points for the aforementioned issues. Btw, Owen stayed married to THAT for almost 20 yrs? How?!?

Rough Recall A Tidewater Novella edition by Tami Veldura Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Baited is a great read I really enjoyed it it is great when love comes together even threw all the hate
Zachary comes to his hometown when his bff mom dies. He still loves him but finds that mason has changed and the whole town has turned homophobic. This story beats all odds.
For me it looks too unfinished, without enough depth or perhaps too far-fetched. You leave your best friend (and lover) without a word and stay away for twenty long years. Then you return, and expect... what? Red carpet and wedding bells?
Zach returns to his native town of Edenburg (sic!). A small place full of nauseating, self-righteous people, who obviously love to point a finger at their neighbours. Pretending that being gay is infectious and therefore taking over price for groceries or refusing to keep a deal, is so out-of-date. Mason has kept a low profile for all those years and thus been tolerated in this narrow minded society. Zach's return destroys the delicate balance and creates problems for Mason. Their old friend Owen is one of the few who accepts them as they are. And one wise old lady (with cat issues). But how will Zach and Mason solve their issues? Will they have a HEA? It is up to the reader to decide.
I did not quite get why the whole town should gather for reading of the last will (if there was an obvious heir to the deceased's belongings), but it was a nice way to voice her opinion on people in the town.
Zach and Mason were childhood lovers, but Mason wouldn't come out of the closet. Nor would he leave their small town to follow Zach to college. Twenty years have passed and Zach has returned home, to be a comfort to Mason whose mother just passed away. See, Zach was sure Mason never "came out" because he didn't want to upset his mom--and Zach is hopeful that Mason will want to be a couple now.

Thing is, you can't go back home. And the small town where they live has some seriously homophobic issues. Zach is known as an out gay man, and his association with Mason, even platonically, is costing Mason friendships and business. The good thing is, there are supportive people around both men. And, an HEA is in store. This was a solid M/M romance with good characters and a believable plot.

I really enjoyed Zach's steadfastness. He could have walked away at any time, but he was fixed on Mason and wouldn't leave him, even if Mason rejected him as a lover. Again. Mason is practical, yet romantic. They make a good couple, and I'm even happier with Mason's mom--from beyond the grave she gave her neighbors what-for. Good for her, and good for Mason, too!
Your classic small town return .
Not much to say its not that it isn't a good read I just was not overall impressed .
It's a easily plausible follow plot that has been tried an true the author plays it out relatively well .
An its ok for a lunch break read .Can be boringly predictable .
But relatable charries an real tension.
I really liked this book. I liked the characters and their personalities. The cat and mouse game they have going on and how the cat won't give up. The crap they have to go through and deal with id's page turning. But to be completely honest... the sex had me turning them even faster. ; )~ It's a sweet story,. Really. I would read more from this author.
Zach left his small home town twenty years ago leaving behind the love of his life, Mason. Mason stayed behind for his Mother, who has just passed away. Zach sells his condo and becomes a consultant to his own business to return to Mason, to help him, to love him. They haven't spoken or been in contact since Zach walked away. Zach has been living his life, dating and sleeping with men that look like Mason, but hasn't been truly happy. Mason has never had another, the town is not accepting of gay - there is pure hatred in them there hills. Small town bigotry is rampant and when Zach returns and looks to Mason to be the same person there are implications to Mason's livelihood as the town passes judgement over him and his kind.
It is a nicely written story and iv quite vivid in the descriptions. I have to say, though, I am now depressed and in need of some chocolate after this. Mason's life has been so very, very sad and lonely - and Zach was selfish to just abandon him without once reaching out to say hello, Happy Birthday, or I miss you. This is a very sad little short story for a supposedly happy ever after.
